The next day, Alissia and I picked up Yael and went to the London Zoo at Regent's Park, where I paid for the expensive tickets. Yael took Alissia's and my hand and drew us to the gorilla kingdom next to the entrance before he pulled us to the next enclosure. We spent the day watching the animals. Yael's fascination was positively infectious.

He was totally mesmerised by the giraffes. Pointing toward their heads, he exclaimed, “Up! Wanna fly!”

I laughed. “No, buddy, we can't do this here. But I can take you a bit closer.”

I took Yael by his hips and put him on my shoulders. Up there, he tried to reach the animals, but they were too far to touch. Regardless, he liked it up there, so I carried him for the next hour. Whenever we moved on after we watched another animal, I heard him giggle every time I walked; he actively bounced up and down with his bum. Holding his legs, I supported the hopping by moving my shoulders in quick successions. He squealed in delight. At one of the many shops, Alissia bought a stuffed giraffe for him, which he pressed tightly against his chest.

After some hours, we took a break and sat down for a coffee while Yael headed to the playground. He nearly ran into an elderly lady and apologised to her before running to the slide.

“Your son is such a nice boy!” she exclaimed.

I smiled at her but said nothing.

“You know, you look a lot like him. Yael, I mean,” Alissia said, sipping her coffee. We sat on the side of the cafe and could talk undisturbed by others.

“I guess he is my biological half-brother. Yael's mother thought I was the younger brother of Yael's father because I looked so much like him. Our father clearly wanted to preserve his features in us. What an asshole.”

“So? Yael is your family. No matter what kind of person your father is. Since you had no father, you could be one to Yael.”

“What is with you? Would you like to be his substitute mother?” I raised an eyebrow. It was a major decision for her to take on that much responsibility. Was it too early to confront her on this topic?

Alissia smiled at me; she seemed to have made up her mind a long time ago. “Yes, I would love to. As you know, I'm a foster child, and my mothers showed me all the love they could give. If I could share that love with a child, I would gladly do so. It doesn't matter if it's my biological child or not.”

I nodded and watched my little brother running to the slide. My fingers played with the horns of the stuffed giraffe she bought for him.

“I see how great you are with him.” I hesitated. “You know, if you stay with me, we could never have children of our own since we Nephilim are sterile.” I had told her before, but I wanted to be sure she understood completely.
